Dear MBA Family,

Character is like a house, the foundation lies below the surface.  How's your foundation?  Character has also been described as who we are when no one is looking.  Martin Luther King Jr. said it this way, "Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education."    This year at MBA, we will be be focusing on character education in addition to the intellectual and social development of our students.  "Character building is the most important work ever entrusted to human beings."--Ellen G. White.  We will feature a different character education word each month in our worships and learning opportunities (attached).

Welcome to the 2009-2010 school year at MBA.  This weekly email newsletter is my attempt to keep an open channel of communication with you.  I hope to give you a sense of what is happening on campus, inform you about upcoming events, introduce you to some of our students and staff members and share important news about our school.  We will also attach schedules and other useful information.

Welcome
We welcome approximately 205 students to MBA this year.  We still have a few in transition this week.  I also want to welcome Ms. Shelley Hulin as our new academic vice-principal and registrar this year.  Ms. Hulin was the principal at San Antonio Christian School in Ontario, California for the past 3 years.  Before that, she was the principal at Miramonte SDA school in Los Altos, California for 4 years.  Ms. Hulin was born in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada and attended Kingsway College and Union College--where she obtained two B.S. degrees.  She has also completed her administrative certification and is working on a Masters degree in administration from La Sierra University.  In her free time, Ms. Hulin enjoys quilting, crafts and exploring her family's history and geneology.  Her cheery disposition and helpful spirit are much appreciated in our school.  You may contact her with your academic questions (or just to say hello) at academics@montereybayacademy.org.

This week-end
On Friday night, students will be visiting the homes of their staff advisors for an informal evening of worship and relaxation.  Each staff member has approx. 10 student advisees in their home group.  Throughout this year, your child's staff advisor is available to help your child adjust to MBA life and to assist them with problems they might be having.  On Sabbath morning, pastor Bryan delValle will be preaching for the 11:00 worship service on Unity Within the Church.  The Saturday night program, MBA's Got Talent, will feature the diverse talents of our faculty and staff members.  It will start at 8:30pm in Baker chapel and will be very entertaining!  I hope you can join us.

Senior Survival
The entire senior class of 2010 will be leaving for our annual “Senior Survival” experience next Wednesday (August 26) at 8:00a. This will be a time of team-building, spiritual growth, and many other exciting activities. They will be traveling to Leoni Meadows Camp/Retreat Center in Northern California and will return by 5:00p on Sunday, August 30.
I will be attending my nephew's wedding in Minnesota this week-end with my family.  May you experience God's peace and rest this Sabbath.  Thank you for your prayers this year and for entrusting us with your most precious possessions--your children.

Until next time, keep looking up,
Sincerely yours,

Tim Kubrock
