MBA RAKs Up Community ServiceWednesday, September 15, 2004Monterey Bay Academy has many great traditions, from beach activities to the music program to academic achievement. There is one tradition though, that reaches MBA students, faculty and the greater community all at once. That tradition is Random Acts of Kindness Day. On Tuesday, September 14 the entire MBA student body and staff ventured out into local towns performing a variety of tasks from trimming trees to painting a pier to visiting shut ins. “We worked really hard,” Raymond Hong, a freshman from San Francisco said. “It was fun though because the people we met were really appreciative of our efforts.” The different teams from MBA reached a variety of people, working at 12 different locations throughout the Monterey Bay area. Some jobs required as more than 50 students while some required just a few. The work ethic of MBA students though did not go unnoticed by the different job supervisors from the community. “This is a great group of kids,” Charlie Clancy, a Santa Cruz County work crew supervisor who oversaw the San Lorenzo River clean-up said. “They did a great job for us, a very thorough job and have made the community a more pleasant place to live.” Not every job involved cleaning up a park or painting over graffiti, several students had the chance to work with people one on one. “My job was working at VHM Christian School in Santa Cruz,” Nina Yrdobaloza, a senior from Yorba Linda, California said. “We fixed up their play area and spent time helping the students with their classes. I thought that we’d all be pulling weeds all day long, but it was cool to see that there’s lots of different ways to serve others. Working with little kids was my favorite part of the day.” Giving MBA students a chance to see the benefits of service is what RAK day is all about, according to campus pastor and event coordinator Sam Kaligithi said. “It is easy for us to be self-centered,” Kaligithi said. “But RAK Day gives us a chance to get out of our comfort zones and become centered on others. We’re training our students to become Christ’s disciple which means teaching them to be service oriented.” “I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ.” (Philemon 6, NIV) Previous Articles2008 MBA Students Sail for Science 2/29 Europe Trip Gives MBA Students Access to History 2/29 MBA Teacher Wins Award of Excellence 1/30 2007 MBA Students Serve in Peru 12/31 MBA Welcomes New Students and Staff 12/31 MBA Teacher Wins Award of Excellence 12/22 2006 MBA Welcomes 240 Students and New Staff 12/31 Community, Seniors, Football, Prayer, Oceanaires 12/31 MBA Library Undergoes Complete Renovation 12/31 MBA AP Program Growing 12/31 Mission Trip to South Africa 12/31 MBA Teacher Receives Award of Excellence 12/22 2005 MBA Serves The Community 09/14 Tim Kubrock Named MBA's Principal 07/06 MBA Students Make The Grade 02/22 MBA Teacher Receives Award of Excellence 02/21 2004 MBA RAKs Up Community Service 09/15 MBA Celebrates Its 55th Annual Graduation 06/23 MBA Celectrates Its 54th Alumni Weekend 04/20 Back To Back Awards for MBA's Master Teachers 03/24 2003 MBA's Senior Survival A Success 10/20 MBA Serves In India 01/21 ShorelinesNovember/December 2007 September/October 2007 May/June 2007 February/March 2007 December 2006/January 2007 September/October 2006 |
