MBA Celebrates Its 54th Alumni Weekend

Tuesday, April 20, 2004

More than 1,000 alumni are expected to attend the 54th annual alumni weekend at Monterey Bay Academy (MBA) April 23-25. Highlights include a special tribute to two retiring staff and a golf tournament to raise funds for worthy students.

Bob and Betty Baerg will be honored during a special Saturday morning service in the MBA campus church. They have been the academy’s master teachers of math and science for the past 38 years. Almost 8,000 students have graduated from MBA and the Baergs have taught many of them, including two generations of some families.

“The Baergs have seen a lot of their students go on to become doctors, lawyers, scientists and other kinds of community leaders,” alumni director Gina Jett said. “Now those students want to come back and say ‘thank you.’”

The fifth annual golf tournament, sponsored by local businesses and alumni, is the first event of the weekend. It begins on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at the Seascape Golf Club in Aptos. More than 75 community and alumni golfers will participate in the event that's expected to raise more than $10,000. The proceeds support the Alumni Endowment, which awards scholarships academy students.

“Sponsoring this tournament makes you feel like you’re supporting something special,” Diane Young of Young’s Tire in Watsonville said.

MBA will take the time to say ‘thank you’ as well, honoring the fifty-year honor class and the school’s earliest graduates with the ‘49er brunch on Sunday morning. This is a special event to honor the students who started the tradition of excellence at MBA.

This commitment to excellence and education is demonstrated by the 95 percent of its seniors who have gone on to college throughout the history of the school.

“We are truly blessed with our alumni,” principle Bill Keresoma said. “Imagine a school where graduates return year after year to show their gratitude with their time, energy and financial support. That’s our alumni, our family, and it’s always an awesome experience to host this MBA family reunion.”
